The Lachlan River has been central to life for Wiradjuri people for millennia. Join us on a journey to learn how you can help conserve it for the future.
Australia's fourth-longest inland river, the Lachlan rises on the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales.
Flowing westward it terminates in the wetlands of the Great Cumbung Swamp, except during periods of high flow when it connects with the Murrumbidgee River between Hay and Balranald.
The only Inland River in New South Wales with several nationally significant wetlands located along its length, the waterway provides vital habitat for a diverse range of wildlife.
Several critically endangered species call the river home including the Southern bell frog, the secretive bird Australasian bittern, Olive perchlet and the once common and widespread freshwater eel tailed catfish.
