Bila Galari Tour
Forbes, NSW
Now, more than ever before, we need to work together to conserve inland rivers for future generations. We may not be around to hear them say thank you, but they will be forever grateful.
The Lachlan River has been central to life for Wiradjuri people for millennia. Join us on a unique journey to explore the challenges affecting the health of this once-mighty river and learn what you can do to protect its future.
Australia's fourth-longest inland river, the Lachlan rises on the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales. It flows westward before terminating in the wetlands of the Great Cumbung Swamp, except during periods of high flow when it connects with the Murrumbidgee River between Hay and Balranald.
The Lachlan is unique among New South Wales Inland rivers, with several nationally significant wetlands located along its length. The waterway provides vital habitat for a diverse range of wildlife, including critically endangered species such as the Hanley's River Snail, once thought to be extinct before its recent rediscovery, and the Olive Perchlet, one of the rarest fish in the Murray–Darling Basin.
With only one known population in the Southern Basin, the Olive perchlet received a welcome boost when a second population was discovered in an isolated ephemeral lake near Booligal, strengthening hopes for the species' long-term recovery.
